Every year, in late May or early June, Catholic brotherhoods and many people from all over Andalucia, Spain and beyond, travel to Huelva in their "carriolas" (covered wagons), on their horses or on foot and arrive in Almonte to pay tribute to the Virgin del Rocío, housed in her own church. The pilgrimage takes place over the weekend before Pentecost Monday, the seventh weekend after Easter.
Nowadays, each of the brotherhoods has its own house in El Rocío, with stables, as well as its own chapel, with its name displayed at the front. Its members and their friends and families eat and sleep here during the pilgrimage weekend, singing, dancing and praying together.

In the early hours of Pentecost Monday, the Virgin is brough out of her chapel journeys around the town, visiting all the hermandades' chapels, for the rest of the day. Popularly known as La Blanca Paloma (the White Dove), she is an object of massive veneration in Andalucia.

Here you have a video about the procession. For those from abroad, I know it could be difficult to understand, like faith itself. Anyway, not everything can be explained in this life.

The Internet helps you find information about anything and also meet people from all over the world. I´ll give you a clear example; today I´ve received an e-mail from Robert Illes, a musician who loves rock and has shown me part of his last project, Another Black Season. I´d like to thank him for visiting my blog releasing one of his videos.

Thanks a lot, Robert!!

I was quite surprised this morning when my students told me that they hadn´t ever heard about the band U2...

Well, U2 are an Irish band formed in Dublin in 1976. Their members are Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Barry Mullen Jr. Bono has long been involved in a variety of causes outside of U2. He travelled to Ethiopia, Central America, has toured as part of the Amnesty International benefit tour, he campaigned with Greenpeace, drew attention to the conflict in Bosnia, he has tried to end AIDS and extreme poverty in Africa and cancel Third World debt, etc. All these initiatives have earned Bono numerous honours and awards and has at least two nominations on separate occasions for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Here you have their song "I still haven´t found what I´m looking for." You´ll find many sentences with present perfect tense in them.

The Titanic story, even now after so many years, fascinates people. Here you´ll be able to read about the tragedy and find out new details.
You also have a link to see the ship now, deep in the Atlantic ocean. Breathtaking...

On Wednesday, April 10, 1912, the Titanic set sail for America from Southampton, England. Aboard were not only some of the richest and most influential people of that century, but also the poorest emigrants from Europe and the Middle East, looking for a better life in America.
Although she planned to reach New York the following Wednesday, by April 16 the entire world was shocked to find that this majestic ocean liner had sunk.
At eight o'clock on April 14, many of the passengers were having dinner. The weather was clear and calm. After dinner they were spending their time playing cards, listening to the orchestra and dancing, some others were asleep. At about 11:40 the Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank. Only 705 people were rescued, 1,523 people drowned or froze in the icy cold water. Her desperate call gave coordinates to be 41o46' N, 50o 14' W at the time of the catastrophe. The Titanic sank 1000 miles east of Boston, Massachusetts, and 375 miles southeast of St. John's, Newfoundland.

Messi was born on 24 June 1987 in Rosario, Argentina. His paternal family comes from the Italian city of Ancona, where his ancestor, Angelo Messi, emigrated to Argentina in 1883.He has two older brothers named Rodrigo and Matías as well as a sister named Maria Sol.At the age of five, Messi started playing football for Grandoli, a local club coached by his father Jorge. In 1995, Messi switched to Newell's Old Boys who were based in his home city Rosario. At the age of 11, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency.Primera División club River Plate showed interest in Messi's progress, but did not have enough money to pay for the treatment, as it cost $900 a month.Carles Rexach, the sporting director of Barcelona, had been made aware of his talent as Messi had relatives in Lleida, Catalonia, and Messi and his father were able to arrange a trial.Barcelona signed him after watching him play, offering to pay for the medical bills if he was willing to move to Spain. His family moved to Europe and he started in the club's youth teams.

He made his official debut for the first team in a friendly match against Porto on 16 November 2003.Less than a year later, Frank Rijkaard let him make his league debut against Espanyol on 16 October 2004, becoming the third-youngest player ever to play for Barcelona and youngest club player who played in La Liga. When he scored his first senior goal for the club against Albacete on 1 May 2005, Messi was 17 years, 10 months and 7 days old, becoming the youngest to ever score in a La Liga game for Barcelona until 2007 when Bojan Krkić broke this record, scoring from a Messi assist. Messi said about his ex-coach Rijkaard: "I never forget that Rijkaard has launched me. That he gave me confidence as I only sixteen, seventeen years was."

I really like this song, because it cheers me up when things go wrong. I hope you like it!

Tell me all your wishes
I am here to make them true, don't wonder
You don't have to rub a lamp
'Cause I'll take care of you

Nobody knows, nobody knows
Nobody knows, nobody knows

Tell me what you think I'm one of your kind
You know a girl like me is difficult to find
I bet you've never seen nothing like this before
I bet you've never met someone who loved you more

You know that I'm a witch and I can read your mind boy
Where do I have to sign
I'm on a board

My new resolution is to trust you
My business to love you until you've had it
I'm not gonna miss out on the good stuff
The grass is much greener with us on it

Better than to sail on the Mediterranean Sea
Better than to get a fancy Gucci dress for free

Don't think it over
Think it over
Don't think it over
Think it over

Totally up to you what you do with me
I'm gonna make it up to us and you will see
Don't have to prove it, it is written in your eyes
Tonight you'll be the winner I will be the prize

You know that I'm a witch and I can read your mind boy
Where do I have to sign
I'm on a board

My new resolution is to trust you
My business to love you until you've had it
I'm not gonna miss out on the good stuff
The grass is much greener with us on it

Watch my body get lower
As low as it can go
All the boys will follow
I'll show you something you don't know

Watch my body get lower
As low as it can go
All the boys will follow
I'll show you something you don't know

Cause I know what you want
And I like that

My new resolution is to trust you

My business to love you until you've had it
I'm not gonna miss out on the good stuff
The grass is much greener with us on it

My new resolution is to trust you
My business to love you until you've had it
I'm not gonna miss out on the good stuff
The grass is much greener with us on it
It´s been a hard and long day for me today, however here´s the entry about Europe, guys ..."better late than never."
I´ve received many interesting e-mails from you about Europe and I ´ve designed an entry with some of the information that you´ve sent me.
Thank you all for your effort!!

THE EUROPEAN FLAG (Antonio C. 4º A)

The European flag is formed by twelve golden stars placed in circle on blue bottom. It was designed by Arsène Heitz, a painter of Strasbourg. The number of stars does not have anything to see with the number of members states. There are twelve stars because the number twelve is traditionally the symbol of the perfection, the complete thing and the unit.

EUROPEAN CURRENCIES (Ana M. 4º B)

The euro is the official currency of sixteen of twenty-seven member states of the European Union. The states, known collectively as the Eurozone, are Germany, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta and Portugal. The currency is also used in five other European countries, both official and non-agreed form and thus is in daily use by about 327 million Europeans. Over 175 million people worldwide use the euro coin set, including more than 150 million Africans.

EUROPEAN MONUMENTS (David P. 4º B)

May 1st is also called May Day. On this day, people celebrate the coming of summer with different customs that express happiness.

On May Day, people used to cut down young trees and stick them in the ground in the village to mark the arrival of summer. People danced around the tree poles in celebration of the end of winter and the start of the warm weather that would allow planting to begin. Maypoles were kept from one year to the next. The tallest maypole is said to have been erected in London on the Strand in 1661; it stood over 143 feet high.

Nowadays, people perform various maypole dances and schools practice skipping round the pole for weeks. The result should be a beautiful plaited pattern of ribbons round the pole, but it is not easy...
