Learning how to use gerunds and infinitives after a verb can be difficult in English, I know, but don´t panic. Let´s put our ideas in order and go for it !!

We use gerunds (verb + ing):
  • After certain verbs - I enjoy singing
  • After prepositions - I drank a cup of coffee before leaving
  • As the subject or object of a sentence - Swimming is good exercise
We use 'to' + infinitive:
  • After certain verbs - We decided to leave
  • After many adjectives - It's difficult to get up early
  • To show purpose - I came to London to study English
We use the bare infinitive (the infinitive without 'to'):
  • After modal verbs - I can meet you at six o'clock
  • After 'let', 'make' and (sometimes) 'help' - The teacher let us leave early
  • After some verbs of perception (see, watch, hear, notice, feel, sense) - I watched her walk away
  • After expressions with 'why' - why go out the night before an exam?

                                                                Verb + Gerund

admit - anticipate - appreciate - avoid - complete - consider - defend - delay - despise - detest - discuss - dislike - enjoy - escape - excuse - finish - get through - give up - can't help - imagine - imvolve - keep (on) - mention - (not) mind - miss - postpone - practice - put off - recall - recollect - recommend - report - resent - resume - risk - (can't) see - suggest - take up - tolerate - understand.

I don´t mind washing the dishes after dinner
John suggested going to the mountain for the holidays
Claire enjoys living in Prague

Note: remember that gerunds can follow a preposition, infinitives cannot. Take care not to confuse the preposition "to" with an infinitive form, or with an auxiliary form such as have to, used to, going to
Can you touch your toes without bending your knees?
She got the money by selling the car.
Note: some verbs are followed by a pronoun or noun referring to a person, and then an infinitive. Gerunds cannot be used in this position.

ask, beg, cause, expect, invite, order, remind, teach, tell, wannt, warn.

I must ask you to reconsider your statement

Are your students especially passive today? Do  you need to engage them? Change your plans for today´s lesson  and try this. It´s amazing how crazy and enthusiastic your students can get when listening to this funny and silly video by Ylvis that wonders what sound the fox makes.

Talk to them about the importance of having  pets,  ask them if they have one at home. If so, they can tell you about their experience. You can also Play Scattergories using films with animals in title (Spiderman, The Black Swan, Kung Fu Panda, Batman, The Fly, Octopus, Cocodrile Dundee,  The Pink Panther,  The Crow, Planet of the Apes,  King Lion...)

Actually, no one knows what the fox says, but we know that...

Have you ever made any New Year´s resolutions?
What were they?

A New Year´s resolution is a decision on the first day of the year about the things you want to change in your daily life in order to make it better. A resolution is a promise to yourself, so you must keep it against all odds,  Studies say that 37% of men reach their goals, but only 30 % of women do. Curious, isn´t it?

These are  some of the most popular New Year´ s resolutions.

I will...

Do sport
Start a diet
Give up smoking
Learn languages
Make new friends
Save money
Take a trip
Enjoy life more
Help others
Pay off debts
Find a better job

To make it easier, apart from choosing a goal, you should define the steps that will take you there.
Reading your resolutions to friends or members of your family will also help you reach your goals.

An example?

Resolution 1: I will lose some weight

Step 1: I will eat healthy food
Step 2: I will walk to work
Step 3: I will join a gym

Now you can make your own New Year´s resolutions. Click here!

Do you want to know my New Year´s resolutions? Come closer, I´ll whisper in your ear...
