Carmen María's English Blog

This post is especially dedicated to those who write me and visit my blog from a foreign country. I know that many of you would like to learn about my region and its customs.

Seville, my city, belongs to a region called Andalusia. Andalusia is in the south of Spain  and is famous for its friendly people, its climate, food, beaches and landscapes. Every February 28th we celebrate and commemorate the 1980 referendum on the Statute of Autonomy of Andalusia, in which Andalusia became an autonomous community of Spain.

The last schoolday before the 28th of February we celebrate rhe Andalusian Day at school with a typical breakfast which consists of bread and olive oil, we do performances, read Andalusian poets, play our anthem, dance and have a good time.

Have you ever visited my region? Here you have some information about it...

Our map...
 Our flag...

Our anthem...

                                             The Green and White Flag
                                          returns after centuries of war
to tell of peace and hope
                                             under our land's sunshine.
                                              Andalusians, stand up!
                                           Demand land and freedom!
                                              For a free Andalusia,
                                              Spain and Mankind!
                                             We, Andalusians, want
                                              to become once again
people of light who to Mankind
                                                gave a human soul.
                                             Andalusians, stand up!
                                             Demand land and freedom!
                                                    For a free Andalusia,

If all roads lead to Rome, how can I leave Rome?

We´ve been talking about art  this week. I´d like to show you a fascinating artist.
 Do you know M.C. Escher?

Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was born in the Netherlands. He is one of the world's most famous graphic artists in the world.

M.C. Escher, during his lifetime, made 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings and over 2000 drawings and sketches. Many of these sketches were later used for various other lithographs and woodcuts and wood engravings.
He played with architecture, perspective and impossible spaces. In his work we recognize his personal observation of the world around him and a reality inspired by mathematics and his own fantasies.

Hola, chicos!!

Reading y use of english

  • 1 hora y 15 minutos

The Tudor age was a very lively period in English history, a time of new learning, trade and expansion. The most interesting of the Tudor monarchs are Henry VIII and his daughter Elizabeth I.
Henry is best-known for having six wives and for establishing the Church of England. Elizabeth´s reign was a long and golden one. It is famous for sea exploration and naval victories, especially the sinking of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Elizabeth England was also great for literature - it was then that Shakespeare lived.

Goodnight...

We usually need time to ourselves. Afternoon at home alone. Comfort, literature, hot chocolate, homemade biscuits, The Cure in the background...and wings.

Maybe we feel empty because we leave pieces of  ourselves in everything we used  to love.

End of the weekend. A new week begins...
Geronimooooooooooo!!!!!

Goodnight...

I watched "New Year´s Eve" on TV last Sunday. A simple Christmas film, full of simple stories that makes you see how simple things are the most important ones in life.

I want to thank 2014 for the all the things it has given me, and also for those that  gave me and asked me to give back later, Life sometimes just lends you things, as they are not meant to be yours.

My best wishes for the new year. Remember, 2015 is a blank book to write a new story :)

Whenever, however, whatever...

A break from the noise...

I hope this Christmas Eve finds you in a warm place...
Have a great night!!!

"My Best Friend' s Wedding": the boat scene, one of my favourites.
Sometimes the moment passes you by.

Getting old is not a question of time, it is not a question of years. You start getting older when you spend most of your time looking back instead of looking ahead or making arrangements. It is not relevant if you are twenty or seventy, it is only a question of attitude.

St Andrew has been recognized as the patron saint of Scotland since the ninth century. He is said to have died bound to an “X” shaped cross, so this shape is now reflected in the Scottish flag, known as the Saltire.

According to a legend, a monk called Regulus brought relics of St Andrew to Scotland where he was given land to build a church by a Pictish king. That place grew into the town of St Andrew's, where the cathedral became a place of religious pilgrimage.

St Andrew's Day is a bank holiday in Scotland, a calebration of Scottish culture with traditional Scottish food, music and dance. In Edinburgh, there is a week of celebrations, musical entertainment and traditional ceilidh dancing (couples dancing in circles or sets)

Lending some of your free time to help those in need is really rewarding.

I have been a volunteer to the food donation campaign 2014 by Banco de Alimentos, which urgently needed baby food and nappies. as well as beans, chickpeas, rice, pasta, oil, flour, milk, cereals, cocoa and sugar as usual.  Thanks to people´s generosity, we have filled five huge containers with food and hope to be delivered to many families in Seville.

Feeling happy is sometimes very easy...and I feel happy tonight.
Thanks María L. P. for your suggestion. Waiting for Mockingjay part 2 :)

Domestic violence is any violent or abusive behaviour used by one person to dominate and control another within a close personal or family relationship.
It can manifest itself in many ways:

  • It can be physical: Beating, punching, kicking, slapping, or sexual assault.
  • It can be emotional: Bullying, isolating from family and friends, undermining self-confidence.
  • It can be verbal: Put downs, name calling, shouting.
  • It can be threats: Threats to kill or harm you or another person, including children; to kill or harm pets; threats to kill themselves.
  • It can be financial: Control over money; not allowing money for personal items, food or transport.Unfortunately Violence against women continues to be a global pandemic.
Nowadays, violence against women continues to be a global pandemic and we must fight for its elimination and prevention.

"Everyone has a responsibility to prevent and end violence against women and girls, starting by challenging the culture of discrimination that allows it to continue."

Secretary-General of the UN

Children´s Rights Day is celebrated every 20th of November, anniversary of the International convention for children´s rights in 1989.

Thanks, Francisco A. (4th year A Secondary) for your contribution. I´ve chosen one of the songs you´ve sent me, as it´s perfect to commemorate this day.

Going out tonight, changes into something red
Her mother doesn't like that kind of dress
Everything she never had, she's showing off

Driving too fast, moon is breaking through her hair
She's having something that she won't forget
Having no regrets is all that she really wants

Because we all need angels on our way and a bit of heaven...

When we´re feeling down we usually listen to sad music, don´t we?
Researchers at the Free University of Berlin have recently discovered that listening to sad songs when feeling lonely or distressed improves our emotional wellbeing as well as make us feel at peace and consolated by it.

The study says that sad music stirs up a mixture of complex and ‘partially positive’ emotions like nostalgia, peacefulness, tenderness, transcendence and wonder... and that helps us.

Do you agree? Why/why not?
What´s the saddest song you´ve ever listened to?

Anyway, against all research, I still prefer Pitbull when I ' m feeling down ;)

It has been a relaxing day today. No school, that is, time off work. I have taken out all my vinyl records and played some of them. Camel, Kansas, Boston, OMD and Alan Parson among others.

Time goes by so fast...
