Thought of the Day

Before my English classes start, one of the students in each group, in alphabetical order every day, is responsible for writing a motivational quote on the blackboard.

We discuss the meaning and learn a lot, not only about vocabulary, but also about ourselves. They really like it, and if I ever forget, they always remind me!!  :)

I must say that sometimes they really surprise me...

The National Wallace Monument  on the Abbey Craig, a hill near Stirling, in Scotland, commemorates Sir William Wallace, also known as Braveheart, the Scottish hero.

Warriors

In response to a suggestion...and because I also love Imagine Dragons.
Thanks, S. L. (4th A Secondary)!!!!!!

 WARRIORS

As a child you would wait,
   And watch from far away,
But you always knew that you’d be the
One to work while they all play.
In youth, you'd lay awake at night and scheme
Of all the things that you would change,
But it was just a dream.
Here we are don’t turn away, now
We are the Warriors that built this town.
Here we are don’t turn away, now
We are the Warriors that built this town from dust.
The time will come when you will have to rise
Above the best and prove yourself
  Your spirit never dies
Farewell, I’ve gone to take my throne above
But don’t weep for me, cause this will be the labor of my love.
Here we are don’t turn away, now
We are the Warriors that built this town.
Here we are don’t turn away, now
We are the Warriors that built this town.
  From Dust
Here we are don’t turn away, now
We are the Warriors that built this town.
Here we are don’t turn away, now
We are the Warriors that built this town.
  From Dust.

A Pink World

October 11th was declared International Day of the Girl Child by the UN in 2011. Every year, since then, International Day of the Girl is an opportunity for the whole world to come together  and advocate for girls’ rights around the world,  fighting against their devaluation and neglect.

On this day, several monuments  and landmarks around the world are lit up in pink to raise awareness of the importance of girls´ rights.

Rainy morning

"The rain in Spain is mainly in the plain", repeated  Eliza Doolittle in the film "My Fair Lady", trying to break her Cockney accent with speech exercises.

Do you want to see the rain in Seville? Have a look. Seville, today 10th of October,  8 a.m.

Chaos, flooded roads and  traffic jams everywhere. Two hours and a half to drive my daily fifteen-minute journey to work. However it was not better by bus...

By the way, let´s learn some idioms related to the rain.

  • To rain cats and dogs:  llover a cántaros.
What an awful weather! it´s raining cats and dogs.
  • To rain on (somebody´s) parade :  aguar la fiesta.
I was looking forward to going out with my friends but my mum rained on my parade when she  told me   I  couldn’t.
  • (as) right as rain: fresco como una rosa
I feel really exhausted now,  but I’m sure I’ll be as right as rain after some sleep.
  • When it rains, it pours  /  it never rains but it pours:  las desgracias nunca vienen solas.
Janet´s  mother died, then she got fire after a serious disease.  It never rains but it pours!
  • To  take a raincheck:  dejarlo para otro momento.
John:  Do you fancy playing tennis tommorrow?
Steve:  I’ll take a raincheck. I have an exam next Monday.
  • To save for a rainy day: ahorrar para los tiempos de vacas flacas.
I’m not going to spend my money on a new car, I’ll save it for a rainy day.

If I lose myself

An energy charge to start the weekend after a long week.

If I  lose myself  tonight, it' ll be by your side, that' s sure...

Goodnight :)

I stared up at the sun
Thought of all the people,
places and things I’ve loved

You can feel the light start to tremble
Washing what you know out to sea
You can see your life out of the window, tonight

If I lose myself tonight
It’ll be by your side
If I lose myself tonight (x2)

I woke up with the sun
Thought of all the people, places and things I’ve loved

You can feel the light start to tremble
Washing what you know out to sea
You can see your life out of the window, tonight

If I lose myself tonight
It’ll be by your side
If I lose myself tonight (x2)

If I lose myself tonight
It’ll be you and I
Lose myself tonight

"Wish You Were Here" (Pink Floyd)

Perhaps you, my students,  don´t know who Pink Floyd are (too young perhaps?), but believe me if I say that they are one of the best bands ever.

Born in England in the sixties, Pink Floyd mixed music with psychedelia and social criticism, all in one. Perhaps you are familiar with the album The Wall, which appeared in the eighties, am I right?

I have received a suggestion from a visitor to post an entry with one of their songs, and here it is.

"Wish you were here", a great song for great moments.

Waiting for your ideas!!!

OJALÁ QUE ESTUVIERAS AQUÍ

Así que crees que sabes distinguír
el cielo del infierno
El cielo azul del dolor
¿Sabes distinguír un campo verde
de un frío rail de acero?
¿Una sonrisa de un velo?
¿Crees que puedes distinguír?
¿Consiguieron hacerte cambiar
tus héroes por fantasmas?
¿Cenizas ardientes por árboles?
¿Aire caliente por una brisa fresca?
¿Frío comfort por un cambio?

Y ¿cambiaste
un papel principal en la guerra
por un papel protagonista en una jaula?

Ojalá,ojalá que estuvieras aquí.
Sólo éramos dos almas perdidas
nadando en una pecera
año tras año
Corriendo siempre por
el mismo camino
¿Qué hemos encontrado?
Los mismos miedos de siempre
Ojalá que estuvieras aquí.
