28th November : Homeless Day in Spain

We should take care and support homeless people, draw our attention to their needs and give them opportunities. Get in touch with Caritas, local churches, registered charities and help them.

SHE CALLS OUT TO THE MAN ON THE STREET
"SIR, CAN YOU HELP ME?
IT´S COLD AND I´VE NOWHERE TO SLEEP,
IS THERE SOMEWHERE YOU CAN TELL ME?"

HE WALKS ON, DOESN´T LOOK BACK
HE PRETENDS HE CAN´T HEAR HER
STARTS TO WHISTLE AS HE CROSSES THE STREET
SEEMS EMBARRASSED TO BE THERE

OH THINK TWICE, IT´S ANOTHER DAY FOR
YOU AND ME IN PARADISE
OH THINK TWICE, IT´S JUST ANOTHER DAY FOR YOU,
YOU AND ME IN PARADISE

SHE CALLS OUT TO THE MAN ON THE STREET
HE CAN SEE SHE´S BEEN CRYING
SHE´S GOT BLISTERS ON THE SOLES OF HER FEET
CAN´T WALK BUT SHE´S TRYING

OH THINK TWICE, IT´S ANOTHER DAY FOR
YOU AND ME IN PARADISE
OH THINK TWICE, IT´S JUST ANOTHER DAY FOR YOU,
YOU AND ME IN PARADISE

OH LORD, IS THERE NOTHING MORE ANYBODY CAN DO
OH LORD, THERE MUST BE SOMETHING YOU CAN SAY

YOU CAN TELL FROM THE LINES ON HER FACE
YOU CAN SEE THAT SHE´S BEEN THERE
PROBABLY BEEN MOVED ON FROM EVERY PLACE
´COS SHE DIDN´T FIT IN THERE

OH THINK TWICE, IT´S ANOTHER DAY FOR
YOU AND ME IN PARADISE
OH THINK TWICE, IT´S JUST ANOTHER DAY FOR YOU,
YOU AND ME IN PARADISE
........................................................................................

ELLA LLAMA AL HOMBRE EN LA CALLE
´SEÑOR, ¿PUEDE AYUDARME?
HACE FRÍO Y NO TENGO LUGAR DONDE DORMIR
¿PUEDE RECOMENDARME ALGÚN LUGAR?´

ÉL SIGUE CAMINANDO, NO MIRA ATRÁS
SIMULA NO PODER OÍRLA
COMIENZA A SILBAR MIENTRAS CRUZA LA CALLE
PARECE AVERGONZARSE DE ESTAR ALLÍ

PIÉNSALO DOS VECES, ES OTRO DÍA PARA
TI Y PARA MI EN EL PARAÍSO
 PIÉNSALO DOS VECES, ES OTRO DÍA PARA TI,
PARA TI Y PARA MI EN EL PARAÍSO

ELLA LLAMA AL HOMBRE EN LA CALLE
ÉL PUEDE VER QUE ELLA HA ESTADO LLORANDO
ELLA TIENE AMPOLLAS EN LAS PLANTAS DE SUS PIES
NO PUEDE CAMINAR PERO LO ESTÁ INTENTANDO

PIÉNSALO DOS VECES, ES OTRO DÍA PARA
TI Y PARA MI EN EL PARAÍSO
OH, PIÉNSALO DOS VECES, ES OTRO DÍA PARA TI,
PARA TI Y PARA MI EN EL PARAÍSO

OH SEÑOR, ¿NO HAY NADA MÁS QUE ALGUIEN PUEDA HACER?
OH SEÑOR, DEBE HABER ALGO QUE PUEDAS DECIR

PUEDES DECIRLO POR LOS RASGOS DE SU CARA
PUEDES VER QUE ELLA ESTUVO ALLÍ
PROBABLEMENTE HA SIDO ECHADA DE TODOS LADOS
PORQUE ELLA NO ENCAJABA ALLÍ

OH, PIÉNSALO DOS VECES, ES OTRO DÍA PARA
TI Y PARA MI EN EL PARAÍSO
OH, PIÉNSALO DOS VECES, ES OTRO DÍA PARA TI,
PARA TI Y PARA MI EN EL PARAÍSO

La la la la
La la la la
La la la la

I want you to love me, like I'm a hot guy
Keep thinkin' of me, doin' what you like
So boy forget about the world cuz it's gon' be me and you tonight
I wanna make your bed for ya, then imma make you swallow your pride

[CHORUS]
Want you to make me feel like I'm the only girl in the world
Like I'm the only one that you'll ever love
Like I'm the only one who knows your heart
Only girl in the world...
Like I'm the only one that's in command
Cuz I'm the only one who understands how to make you feel like a man
Want you to make me feel like I'm the only girl in the world
Like I'm the only one that you'll ever love
Like I'm the only one who knows your heart
Only one...

Want you to take me like a thief in the night
Hold me like a pillow, make me feel right
Baby I'll tell you all my secrets that I'm keepin', you can come inside
And when you enter, you ain't leavin', be my prisoner for the night

[CHORUS]
Want you to make me feel like I'm the only girl in the world
Like I'm the only one that you'll ever love
Like I'm the only one who knows your heart
Only girl in the world...
Like I'm the only one that's in command
Cuz I'm the only one who understands, like I'm the only one who knows your heart, only one...

Take me for a ride
Oh baby, take me high
Let me make you first
Oh make it last all night
Take me for a ride
Oh baby, take me high
Let me make you first
Make it last all night

[CHORUS]
Want you to make me feel like I'm the only girl in the world
Like I'm the only one that you'll ever love
Like I'm the only one who knows your heart
Only girl in the world...
Like I'm the only one that's in command
Cuz I'm the only one who understands how to make you feel like a man
Only girl in the world...
Girl in the world...
Only girl in the world...
Girl in the world...

All Saints Day in Spain

All Saints Day in Spain (Todos Los Santos) takes place on November 1st. It is a national public holiday when people honor the saints and remember all the dead. Spanih people visit the local cemeteries and lay flowers on the graves of their deceased relatives.

As well as the religious side, we cannot forget the typical sweets of these days: people eat "huesos de santo’ (saint’s bones), which are made of marzipan dough rolled into thick thumb-size tubes and filled with sweet egg yolk.

One of the All Saints’ traditions across Spain is the performing of the play Don Juan Tenorio, written by José Zorrilla. It is a story of Don Juan's choice between salvation and damnation. The third act of the play is set in a cemetery where Don Juan expresses his regrets and begs forgiveness at the tomb of his fiancee, Doña Ines, for abandoning her.

Good Luck!!
This post is especially dedicated to Eduardo. Thanks for the bookmarks  you´ve sent me (one of them has inspired me to write about Henry VIII)...and thanks, again, for being my friend.

HENRY VIII
"Divorced, beheaded, died; Divorced, beheaded, survived."

Henry VIII (28 June 1491 – 28 January 1547) was king of England from 21 April 1509 until his death. Henry was the second monarch of the House of Tudor, succeeding his father, Henry VII.  He married six times and there is a popular rhyme which describes his wives´s fate.

                              "Divorced, beheaded, died;
                            Divorced, beheaded ,survived"

Catherine of Aragon, a Spanish princess, was Henry's first wife. They were married  for many years. Her determination to stay married to Henry, in the face of his desire for Anne Boleyn, would change the course of history forever.

Anne Boleyn, Henry's second wife, and the mother of Queen Elizabeth I. Henry fell passionately in love with Anne while married to Catherine of Aragon. He waited several years to marry Anne, but he soon  lost his desire for her once she became his Queen.

Jane Seymour, Henry's beloved third Queen. Gentle, capable Jane gave Henry his long-awaited male heir after one year of marriage. Sadly, she gave her life to do so.

Anne of Cleves, Henry's fourth wife. This German princess served as Queen for only a few months before she and Henry agreed to divorce by mutual consent.

Katherine Howard, Henry's fifth wife. Henry's marriage to this teenager brought him brief happiness, but ended in tragedy.

Katherine Parr, Henry's sixth Queen. This intelligent, loyal, forward-thinking Renaissance woman outlived three husbands, including Henry, and went on to finally marry the man of her choice.

A PRAYER

We all feel bad sometimes. If so, here you have part of a beautiful prayer by Mother Teresa of Calcutta. We should always look back before complaining.

Lord,

When I am hungry, send me someone to feed;
When I am thirsty, send me someone who needs a drink;
When I am cold, send me someone to warm;
When I am sad, send me someone to cheer;
When I need understanding, send me someone who needs mine;
When I need to be looked after, send me someone to care for;
When I think only of myself, draw my thoughts to another.
So let us pray as though everything depends on God,
and work as though God depends on us for everything.

Agatha Christie

Have you visited Google today? Beautiful, isn´t it?
It is 120 years since  Agatha Christie was born and search engine Google is celebrating with a doodle on its home page. Do you want to know about this woman?

Agatha May Clarissa Miller (1890-1976) was born in Devon, England in 1890, the youngest of three children in a conservative, well-to-do family.
As a child Agatha Christie never attended school and learned at home with the help of a tutor. She became adept at creating games to keep herself occupied at a very young age. A shy child, unable to adequately express her feelings, she first turned to music as a means of expression and, later in life, to writing.

In 1914, at the age of 24, she married Archie Christie, a World War I fighter pilot. While he was off at war, she worked as a nurse. It was while working in a hospital during the war that Christie first came up with the idea of writing a detective novel. Although it was completed in a year, it wasn't published until 1920, five years later.

"The Mysterious Affair at Styles" gave the world the inimitable Hercule Poirot, a retired Belgian police officer, Christie wrote more than 30 novels featuring Poirot. Among the most popular was "Murder on the Orient Express" (1934) and "Death on the Nile" (1937).

In 1926, her husband asked for a divorce and Agatha, already upset by the recent death of her mother, disappeared. All of England became wrapped up in the case of the now famous missing writer. She was found three weeks later in a small hotel, explaining to police that she had lost her memory. Thereafter, it was never again mentioned.

She later found happiness with another marriage to a young archaeologist who she met on a trip to Mesopotamia.

Another of Christie's most well-known and beloved characters was introduced in "Murder at the Vicarage" in 1930. Miss Jane Marple, an elderly spinster, solved all manner of mysteries with intense concentration and intuition.

In all, she wrote over 66 novels, numerous short stories and screenplays, and a series of romantic novels using the pen name Mary Westmacott. Several of her works were made into successful feature films, the most notable being Murder on the Orient Express (1974). Her work has been translated into more than a hundred languages. In short, she is the single most popular mystery writer of all time.

In 1971 she was awarded the high honor of becoming a Dame of the British Empire.

This video, which my friend Valme posted on her Facebook, is one of the most beautiful speeches I´ve ever heard. As she is so generous, I know she won´t get angry if I release it here on my blog. It´s only six minutes long, but made me cry.
To women, especially housewives and mothers, to my students´ mothers, who also visit my blog, and...to MY mother, with all my love.

The Simpsons

Do you like watching TV? What´s your favourite
TV programme?
I´m sure most of you like THE SIMPSONS. So, read
about this famous series and look up in your
dictionary the words you don´t know.

The Simpsons is an American animated television series created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series is a satirical parody of a working-class American lifestyle epitomized by its eponymous family,which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The show is set in the fictional city of Springfield, and lampoons American culture, society, television and many aspects of the human condition.
The Simpsons has won dozens of awards
since it debuted as a series, including 27 Primetime Emmy Awards, 27 Annie Awards and a Peabody Award. Time magazine's December 31, 1999 issue named it the 20th century's best television series, and on January 14, 2000 the Simpson family was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program, and in 2009 it surpassed Gunsmoke as the longest running American primetime entertainment series. Homer's exclamatory catchphrase "D'oh!" has been adopted into the English lexicon, while The Simpsons has influenced many adult-oriented animated sitcoms.

PAST SIMPLE

Sigamos repasando, chic@s.

She finished school last year -> Acabó el colegio el pasado año.

Who wrote that letter?

to listen (escuchar) -> listened

to change (cambiar) -> changed

to stop (parar) -> stopped
to travel (viajar) -> travelled

Did you go to the party?

I didn´t go to the party -> No fui a la fiesta.

Vale? Venga, ánimo...NEVER GIVE UP!!!!

MISSING ME? just kidding, of course.

  • She is studying English ( Ella está estudiando inglés (no precisamente ahora)
  • You are always working ( Estás siempre trabajando (lo hace frecuentemente)
  • I am going to Madrid next week  (Voy a Madrid la semana que viene)

  • I am not eating now - Yo no estoy comiendo ahora
  • Are you eating?
  • Work - workin,  play - playing,  study - studying, prepare - preparing

STATIVE VERBS
